The Sphar Family Piano!

The Sphar Family Piano!

I am a part time mom, part time substitute teacher, and have volunteered as an elementary school choir accompanist for the last 15 years. My husband and I have been married for 27 years and have 3 kids.
When my husband and I got married, he was in the Navy. I moved up to Washington state with him. This left me without a piano to fill my days because we were just beginning in life. We had discussed getting one but the finances were tight. Three months after moving there we discovered the wonder that is neighborhood yard sale. That Saturday we found a grand piano and 2 consoles, unfortunately the grand was too big for our current home and the price was out of our current range. The two console were not up to my liking (probably why they were in the yard sale). We decided not to pursue them. On the way home I saw another sign for a yard sale. This one was in a cul-de- sac. We pulled in and rummage around. As I backed out of that house area, I looked in the rearview mirror and got a glimpse of the most beautiful site. An upright grand piano with beautiful carvings. It had a sign on it the said $500 o.b.o. Of course the cabinet doesn't tell me what the sound is like. I start to play "Malaguena" and I loved it. The owner said that they were the third owners and his daughter only played it little. And that the previous owner to him said they played it very little. He said it was a 1912 Lester. I loved the sound and was just a little bit excited about the possibility of owning it. We purchased it and had a moving company get it to our home. This piano has moved from Washington to Oregon and then here to Utah. I have had it through my husbands deployments and the growing of our family. My kids have learned to play on it. It has been there to be my therapist when I am sad, mad, or just want to get out of my out of my thoughts. We have discussed getting a new one, but whenever I go to look for one nothing sounds or feels like my piano. My husband says that this piano is my best friend. If I have to part with it it would be like losing a member of my family. I would love to keep it in our home.
